Cwmbran Library with Alex Wharton

13/07/2022

When Ymaginosity Ambassador, Alex Wharton, had his first poetry collection Daydreams and Jellybeans selected for the Summer Reading Challenge 2022, we knew we wanted to do an event with a local library to mark the occasion. Cwmbran Library, close to where Alex lives and a library he visits often, was the perfect choice and the team at Torfaen Libraries were brilliant at organising the event with us. They arranged for Year 5 and 6 pupils from nearby St David’s RC Primary School to come along to hear about the Summer Reading Challenge and to have a poetry workshop with Alex.

Pupils listened to and joined in with Alex’s performance of some of his poems, and then heard advice and tips about how to write their own poems. For example, looking for inspiration in everyday objects, or going for a combo of two things, like Alex’s Daydreams and Jellybeans title. To continue the pairs theme, pupils explored the library in twos, and drafted their own poems, some of which were read out at the end. As always, we were blown away with all the amazing creations and imagination shown.

With thanks to Alex, all the staff at Cwmbran Library, staff and pupils at St David’s RC Primary, and to Janine and Welsh Government’s Fusion: Torfaen and Caerphilly for funding this ‘Opportunity through Culture’ event.
